A DOLL’S HOUSE

by Henrik Ibsen adapted by Amy Herzog

directed by Jana Mestecky

About A Doll’s House

A seemingly perfect life unravels as Nora, a charming wife and mother, grapples with a shocking secret. Hidden debts and societal expectations force her to confront a harsh truth: she's been living in a carefully crafted dollhouse, yearning for freedom. In a daring move that shakes the very foundation of her world, Nora makes a choice that will leave audiences questioning everything they thought they knew about love, marriage, and self-discovery. Herzog's thrilling, compact and devastatingly contemporary adaptation of Ibsen’s classic drama makes its regional premiere in September.

AVAILABLE ROLES:

Crescent City Stage welcomes diversity and inclusion across the spectrum of race, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, neurodiversity, and artists with disabilities.

Torvald Helmer:  late 30s to early 50s

Nora’s husband, a lawyer and a newly-promoted manager of a local stock bank, who values appearances and social formalities. He is infatuated with Nora, but he talks down to her and treats her like a doll. He is overly concerned with his status in society.

Doctor Rank: late 30s to early 50s

A family friend, who, unlike Torvald, treats Nora as an intelligent human being. He has a stoic acceptance of his fate, once he learns that his illness is terminal.

Kristine Linde: late 30s to early 50s

One of Nora’s old friends who is practical and down-to-earth. She left her former lover, Krogstad, and married someone else for financial stability, but has now been left bankrupt after her husband’s death. She comes to Nora, looking for a job.

Nils Krogstad: 40s-50s

Kristine’s scorned lover and an employee at Torvald’s bank. He previously helped Nora acquire a loan in order to help her when Torvald fell ill. After Torvald fires him, he uses this loan as blackmail against Nora, trying to get his job back at all costs.

Anne-Marie: 40s-60s

Nora’s former nanny, the only mother-like figure Nora ever knew. A kindly woman who has genuine affection for Nora and takes care of Nora’s children as if they were her own. She gave up her own daughter in order to take the nursing job offered by Nora’s father, having sacrificed her own happiness out of economic necessity.
